In the Centro de Hematología y Medicina Interna (CHMI) de Puebla, located within the Clínica RUIZ, a hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) program was started on May, 1993. Initially, only autografts were done and in 1996 allografts were started.Between that date and February 2015, more than 800 HSCT have been done.

Special emphasis has been placed in making the HSCT procedures affordable. This program is currently the largest private practice transplant program in the country. More than 120 publications in both domestic and foreign peer-reviewed journals have been produced. The simplification of the grafting procedures has resulted in a substantial decrease of the costs. More than 90% of the HSCTs can be completed fully on an outpatient basis. The median total cost (procedure, laboratory workup, apheresis, transfusions, catheter, drugs, lodging, transports, etc) of our HSCT is substantially lower than those of other countries.

The program reports the procedures and results to several domestic and international registries:
* To the Secretaría de Salud del Estado de Puebla.
* The Centro Nacional de Trasplantes.
* The Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Registry (CIBMTR)
* To BMT Infonet and to the Worldwide Network for Blood & Marrow Transplantation (WBMT).

The long term-results of both the autografts and allografts conducted in this program are similar to those informed from other bone marrow transplantation programs, both in México and abroad. As a result of the academic activity stemming from this HSCT program, several awards have been obtained.

* "Luis Sánchez Medal” 2000, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2014.
* "Premio Carso-Funsalud” 1997, 2001, 2003 and 2007 in the area of organ transplantation.
* “Ruy Pérez Tamayo 2000”.
* “Premio Nacional de Oncología 2004”.
* “Eduardo Liceaga 2006” by the Academia Nacional de Medicina.
* “Premio Roberto Kretschmer Schmidt 2012” by the Academia Nacional de Medicina.

As a result of the academic activity stemming from this program, Dr. Ruiz-Arguelles was elected both Distinguished Mayo Alumnus and Master of the American College of Physicians. After conducting more than 800 HSCTs in the Centro de Hematologia y Medicina Interna, experience has been gained in different diseases such as acute leukemia, chronic leukemia, aplastic anemia, myeloma, lymphomas, myelodysplasias and autoimmune diseases, including MS, CIDP and NMO.
